Do IBM make Bundy Clocks?

Wednesday 1 September 2010 @ 4:40 pm

The first time clock was invented in November 20, 1888, by Willard Bundy. A year afterward his brother, Harlow Bundy, organized the Bundy Manufacturing Company and began mass producing bundy clocks. Bundy Manufacturing, along with two other time equipment Companies  , was consolidated into the International Time Recording Company (ITR).In 1911 ITR and two other companies were merged, forming Computing Tabulating Recording Corporation (CTR), which subsequently its name to IBM. In 1958 IBM’s Time Equipment Division was sold to the Simplex Time Recorder Company. The time cards usually had the workdays and time in and time out areas marked on them so that employees could “punch in” or “punch out” in the correct place. The employee was responsible to line up the correct area of the card to be punched with an indicator on the time card.

The first punched-card system to be joined to a Z80 microprocessor was developed by Kronos Manufacturing the late 1970s and introduced as a product in 1979. In the 1990s, time clocks started to move away from the mechanical version (hence the change in name from bundy clock to time clock) and quickly evolved into computer based, electronic time tracking systems.

Two decades later later time clocks Include plenty of modern features including biometric and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) readers and, in some hi-tech models web interfaces through which records can be accessed, manipulated and exported into third party software packages.

However, there is still a sizable market for mechanical bundy clocks which have have some modernized features of their own by including some electronics and internal processing . It is true that these products will do a reasonable job of some of the more simple award interpretation tasks such as rounding and overtime calculation. It is also true to say that setting up these advanced features via the keyboard menu systems is often very difficult for end users. In my capacity as a time and attendance consultant I would say that the ease of use offered by the electronic time clock with an associated web interface or time and attendance software is generally much easier for the end user.

Many small companies choose bundy clocks because they are a familiar technology and the seem on the surface to simple and inexpensive. However, cost of ownership is another issue and when the cost of time cards and printer ribbons are factored in the electronic time clock and software option quickly becomes the better alternative. Even in those cases where the site location has no computer or network there are now alternatives such as USB equipped time clocks where the data can be collected on a memory stick .

The time clock has a very interesting history and it is surprising that vestiges of that mechanical bundy clock still remain Having said that it still has a notable market share and no doubt that will continue for some time yet fuelled by cheap imports from China.  Time clock pricing is so competitive that Edit this text make the mistake of purchasing one over a more reliable of functional device. Given the important role these devices play in your business it is a mistake to take the cheaper option. You should always consider paying a more and selecting a quality product with a known presence in your industry sector.
